SATURATION: everyday life transformed – Announcements

SATURATIONN: daily life transformed explores recent works created by a new generation of artists—Dragana Jurišić, Ruth Medjber, Eva O’Leary, Audrey Gillespie, Pádraig Spillane, Ayesha Ahmad, Vittoria Colonna, Conor Clinch, Hazel Coonagh, Megan Doherty, Michael Hanna, Cáit Fahey, and Niamh Swanton– who use photography to explore the lives that unfold before them. Through the use of color they create heightened moods, experiences and emotional states.

Transforming the daily reality of artists in different ways, the artworks exhibited advancements on a spectrum from heightened versions of what is still recognizable realism to fantastical, hyperreal, and sometimes bizarre.

Embracing aspects of the street, music and fashion photography with elements of the documentary tradition, the exhibition is a lighthearted, sometimes claustrophobic, celebratory but also conscious exhibition of fragility, as well as beauty, human life. Inevitably, this reflects, albeit often accidentally, major shifts in society and technology – the way photographs are taken, shared and consumed.

Whereas a previous generation of photographic artists showed a penchant for landscape, or rather place, as a subject, artists here place humanity in all its colorful and gloriously messy complexity at the very center of their practices. Their work, while at times no less political than that of their predecessors, foregrounds questions of personal identity through images that document an emerging and colorful generation.

The exhibition is curated by William Laffan (independent curator) and Dawn Williams (curator, Crawford Art Gallery)

Crawford Art Gallery is a national cultural institution (Cork, Ireland) and is dedicated to Irish and international contemporary and historical visual art. It offers a vibrant and dynamic program of temporary exhibitions that probe the future, contemplate the present and reveal the past to create engaging conversations across time. Located in an important heritage building in the heart of Cork City, it also houses a collection of national significance.
