The News-Journal received 13 Texas Press Association awards in results announced Saturday at the group’s annual convention in Denton.
The News-Journal competes in the Daily Division with newspapers such as the Galveston County Daily News, Victoria Advocate, Lufkin Daily News, Nacogdoches Daily Sentinel, New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung and Tyler Morning Telegraph.
The prizes won in this year’s competition, based on work published in part in 2019 and 2020, are:
Competition, second place: For the total points accumulated in all categories of the competition.
General excellence, third place: For two complete issues.
Page Design, Second Place: Editor Randy Ferguson and former Sports Editor Hayden Henry for a four page design collection.
Featured photography, third place: Photographers Michael Cavazos and Les Hassell for a collection of five photos.
News photography, third place: Cavazos and Hassell for a collection of five photos.
Special Section, Third Place: For part of a special four-part section on Longview’s 150th Anniversary.
Advertising, fourth place: News-Journal graphic designers for a collection of three advertisements.
Column Editor, Fourth Place: Former Associate Editor Phil Latham for a two-column collection.
Title writing, fourth place: Randy Ferguson, for a collection of three titles.
Sports photography, fourth place: Cavazos and Hassell, for a collection of five photos.
