Marta Ortega Perez shines spotlight on Steven Meisel with new show – WWD

LONDON – Marta Ortega Perez, the new president of Inditex, shines the spotlight on another giant of fashion photography: Steven Meisel.

“Steven Meisel 1993 A Year in Photographs” will open in La Coruña, Galicia, Spain in November.

The exhibition is organized with the personal support of Ortega Perez and is part of a long-term initiative to bring “world-class culture to La Coruña” and to promote “the rich cultural spirit of Galicia to the world “.

It comes almost a year after Ortega Perez staged ‘Untold Stories’, an exhibition of the work of Peter Lindbergh, in Inditex’s hometown. This show ran from December 4, 2021 to March 31 and attracted an audience of over 110,000.

According to organizers, Meisel will present images made during “a phenomenal 12-month burst of creativity” in La Coruña on November 19.

It will explore his work throughout 1993, which turned out to be a pivotal moment in Meisel’s career.

He shot 28 covers for Vogue as well as over 100 editorial pieces, including “Anglo-Saxon Attitudes” with Stella Tennant, Bella Freud, Plum Sykes and Honor Fraser, for British Vogue.

The exhibition will feature over 100 portraits from the worlds of fashion and film, including Linda Evangelista, Carla Bruni, Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Jaye Davidson, Barbara Streisand, Marlon Richards, Isabella Blow, Amanda Harlech and Twiggy.

Meisel is one of the most prolific fashion photographers of his generation and has spent a career working with Vogue and Vogue Italia among others.

He photographed Madonna for her 1992 book, “Sex”, and shot campaigns for brands including Prada, Versace, Valentino, Calvin Klein and Zara. He also helped revive the careers of models like Evangelista, Campbell, Tennant, Amber Valletta, Kristen McMenamy and Christy Turlington.

Ortega Perez said that “Meisel’s prodigious talent and tireless creativity made him one of the greatest and most intriguing photographers of his generation. Like the images of the great photographers who came before him, the photographs of Steven go beyond the surface to capture the true personality of his subject, always transcending their context. These are, without a doubt, some of the most important and interesting fashion photography ever made.

She added that the show “will not only be an important addition to the rich tapestry of cultural life in Galicia, but also a rich source of inspiration for all those who are lucky enough to be able to spend time with the remarkable images of Steven “.

After three days of preview, the show will be open to the public, free of charge, from November 19 to May 1, 2023.

As noted, “Untold Stories” was conceived by Lindbergh himself before his death. The exhibition occupied a converted industrial building in the port area of La Coruña, an architectural space created by Elsa Urquijo. It featured over 150 photographs ranging from the early 1980s to 2019.

The show and the space were part of a larger initiative to promote A Coruña, a bustling port city that is also home to Estrella Galicia beer, as a cultural hub.

The Lindbergh exhibit was one of many creative projects Ortega Perez led over the years at Inditex.

She curated the Lindbergh exhibition because she was determined to see the spirit of the photographer live on and share his legacy in his native Galicia. The show was accompanied by a special edition of Taschen’s book “Untold Stories”.
